13 April 2021 7 - 8.30pm
Online talk with Tim Craven ‘Sylva: the Tree in British Art History from Thomas Gainsborough to the Arborealists.’
This talk will examine the tree as a major subject in British art history, from the early days of the native school in the 18th century, through the high Romantic Movement and the Pre-Raphaelite landscape painters of the 19th century to the Neo-Romantics of the 1940s and the Brotherhood of Ruralists of the 1970s. It will consider how the tree was employed as a motif for stylistic development and its contemporary role as a symbol of our fragile, natural environment for The Arborealists.
