Trees have all the visual qualities that I look for in a subject for painting. There is layering, light and shadow, linearity and texture, an endless variety of shape, colour and form. Trees enable me to go far into abstraction without losing them as recognisable objects.
I draw in the woods and take endless photographs then retreat to the studio where the painting may lead me far from the original image. The woods and orchards around my home in East Kent and the reflected trees in the river Creuse in France provide the starting point for my meanderings.
