The Arborealists & The Urban Contemporaries present an exhibition of London Trees
28 March -28 April 2023
This exhibition is a partnership between two distinct groups of artists, The Arborealists and Urban Contemporaries. It will present a diverse range of paintings, prints and drawings on the rich and vital subject of London Trees.
At a time of international anxiety about the existential threats of the effects of global warming, the role of nature and trees in the nation’s capital city has never been more pertinent. It has been estimated that we need to plant two billion trees as soon as possible in an attempt to avert disaster. This exhibition thus aims, with a political slant, to raise awareness of the importance of trees in the lives of London’s citizens.
Trees have enjoyed a long and significant legacy in British art history as part of the landscape tradition and the subject has attracted such artists as Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, JW Inchbold, Harold Gilman, Graham Sutherland, Paul Nash, David Inshaw and George Shaw. Trees in art have always proved popular with gallery visitors and art lovers.
The Artists involved in this collaboration will explore and articulate their responses to the theme in a variety of dynamic ways
Urban Contemporaries
Urban Contemporaries is a fluid group of figurative painters aiming to explore different approaches to the concept of contemporary communities in urban environments. They create ambitious responses to the urban experience, responding in ways that are of interest to their individual practice but with drawing as a starting point, painting as the common medium and the human figure in urban surroundings as the dominant motif. Their aim is to reflect the many varied ‘voices’ of contemporary society and create themed shows that research and reflect on the urban condition.
